Survey number: 555 Event number: 19840928/21 Date: 1984-09-28 GPS: 55.17300,-6.90000. Depth: 3.5 to 0.2 m. [ View map ]

Site Description: The site is a portion of a long linear beach which extends from Downhill to Magilligan Point. It is backed by large extensive sand dunes. The site is situated approx./ 150 m inside an army firing range, indicated by red warning signs. The transect has a moderate slope, which becomes steeper on the extreme upper and lower shores. It is exposed to wave action with the top layer of sand being highly mobile especially on the lower shore. No ground water was observed. The surface of the mid shore had a large number of drift shells. The compact coarse and medium sand had an indistinct black layer approx. 5cm below the surface, although this was not clear enough to put as a distinct depth. A narrow strandline was present with a small amount of rotting algae.
