Creating 3D models using photogrammetry

In October 2024 we were lucky enough to have Dr Jon Chamberlain from University of Essex join us and a team of volunteer divers to trial the use of photogrammetry to create 3D models of rocky, sublittoral habitats at Rathlin Island as well as models of the common sunstar (Crossaster papposus) and the spiny starfish (Marthasterias glacialis) at Strangford Lough. Jon used footage from a variety of underwater cameras including stills photography and video and Agisoft Metashape software in order to create the models. Details of the technique and the 3D models created can be viewed on Jon's blog post.

Nudibranchs of Northern Ireland Identification Workshop

Christine Morrow & Libby Keatley will be running a 1-day workshop on how to find, identify and record the diverse array of nudibranchs we have here in Northern Ireland. Although nudibranchs are found all around our coast and can be found both on shore and by diving, most of them are tiny, and divers and shore explorers often need tips on how to find them! If you have photos of nudibranchs, bring along your laptops and we will have a go at identifying the photos and making them into records. The course is free and suitable for both shore and diver volunteers and no previous knowledge about the group is necessary. To book a place please email c.morrow@qub.ac.uk or l.keatley@qub.ac.uk, as spaces are limited we recommend early booking.
