Site Description: A large very sheltered expanse of mud and muddy sand on the east bank of Lough Foyle, which extends from the artificial dykes used to stop reclaimed land from flooding. The transect extends from a pump house on the dyke westward to the low water. Five box quadrats were taken near low water and five taken approx. 2/3 toward high water from low. Areas in the middle were dug. Arenicola occurred throughout the shore, but tended to be most abundant (50 - 100 per sq. metre) in coarser drier areas towards the lower shore. Arenicola was less abundant in the middle shore (5-30 per sq. metre) where the sediment was almost entirely under about 2 cm of water.
