Survey number: 555 Event number: 19870518/21 Date: 1987-05-18 GPS: 54.79300,-5.73500. Depth: 3.5 to 0.2 m. [ View map ]

Site Description: The bay at the southern end of Larne Lough has a shingle upper shore with large very sheltered intertidal very soft mud flats. The surface of the mud occurs in the mid tide region and a narrow channel 0.5-1 m deep occurs at LW. The near liquid mud has a black layer approx. 2-3 cm deep although not distinctly black (dark grey). Infauna was not abundant. The surface is covered by Zostera and Ulva (originally recorded as Enteromorpha) at certain times of the year. The site was surveyed at high tide from a boat, using 10 random grabs in the area. An Ekman grab was used. The sampling area was well spread due to boat drift.
