Site Description: The transect site is backed by low sand dunes and a steep upper shore composed of shingle. The strandline lies on a bank of pebbles mixed with sand. Below this is a relatively flat mid-shore region composed of loosely packed sand mixed with gravel and small stones. Then there is a bank of gravel, small stones and sand above a low tide flat composed of fine and medium sand with a little shell gravel. At the bottom two sites the water table is at the surface, with no water table observed at any of the top three heights. no black layer was in evidence at any height. There were about 10 Lanice tubes per sq. metre. on the lower shore, with 1 Arenicola cast per sq. metre, but no casts at the top three heights.
