Site Description: The area sampled was situated within a N.T. Nature reserve in the Bann estuary upstream from the tributary of the R. Articlane and downstream from Coleraine Marina. The site was a small muddy bay on the west bank toward the middle of the nature reserve. The bay is approx. 250 m wide having an intertidal extent of about 75 m. It is backed by a narrow saltmarsh with Spartina and other saltmarsh grasses.Ulva sp. (orginally recorded as Enteromorpha sp.) grew on the leaves of the grass at HW; together with Vaucheria sp. and Rhizoclonium riparium growing on the sediment. The shore consists of dry medium sand towards the top becoming wet and muddier with some coarse sand and gravel towards low water. The profile was fairly steep at the top and bottom with a shallower mid shore. In station 3 a layer of stranded shells was found about 7 cm deep in the sediment. Just off transect a small area of boulders were found towards the upper shore, these were covered by Ulva sp. (orginially recorded as Enteromorpha sp.) and Fucus ceranoides. On digging Hediste diversicolor and Corophium sp. were abundant at all stations within the sediment, but little else. The location is popular for fishing and water sports and is noted of importance for overwintering bird populations.
