Site Description: The transect was taken across the middle of Coney Island Bay, on sand between areas of boulders. The boulders themselves will be sampled separately. The lower part of the transect was composed of fine sand; the top of medium grained sand. Sediment at level 5 contained a large amount of organic detritus. There were about 30 Arenicola casts per sq. metre at the bottom three levels on the transect, reduced to 20 per sq. metre on the upper two levels. In addition Lanice was present on the lower two levels. There were several strand lines of drift algae on the upper shingle beach. The lower strand line was taken as high water.
