Survey number: 555 Event number: 19860620/22 Date: 1986-06-20 GPS: 54.36600,-5.56700. Depth: 3.5 to 0.2 m. [ View map ]

Site Description: The area sampled is in the southern part of Castleward Bay, a wide muddy inlet at the north end of the narrows on the western bank and near the town of Strangford. The upper shore is made up of Ascophyllum and Fucus vesiculosus dominated boulders and pebbles (with Patella and littorinids) while the floor of the bay, exposed at low tide is composed of a wide area of mud. This mud is anoxic just below the surface and unsafe to walk on. Much of the mud is covered by wide mats of Ulva (originally recorded as Enteromorpha). Sampling by Eckman grab from a boat at high tide: 10 grabs were taken. Two were counted for individuals of each species and remaining eight used for presence of further species.
