Survey number: 555 Event number: 19860620/21 Date: 1986-06-20 GPS: 54.36383,-5.66700. Depth: 3.5 to 0.2 m. [ View map ]

Site Description: Location found to the north of the causeway between Castle Island and Gores Island. The upper shore has a narrow boulder shore dominated by silt covered Ascophyllum nodosum. The lower shore consists of glutinous mud which has the black layer near the surface. The channel between Castle Island and the mainland has been reclaimed on construction of the Quoile pondage this may lead to increased silting. Scattered Arenicola casts were seen on the surface of the mud at LW, but no surface algal mats observed. The casts became denser towards the edges of the bay. This muddy location was sampled by 10 random known grabs from a boat at high water. The grabs were taken in an area covering the lower half of the intertidal.
