Site Description: Very sheltered extensive mudflats at the southern end of Lough Foyle and to the east of an area of reclaimed land, forming a rectangular flat approx. 3 km by 1.5 km, with saltmarsh on the southern shore. The substrate of the middle and lower shore is soft mud, not possible to walk on, with isolated patches of firmer muddy sand. A transect was done diagonally near the landward end of Longfield Bank which, although compressed, gave most of the intertidal sediment types. Five Ekman grabs were taken at low water and five approx. 2/3 towards high water. Longfield Bank is formed from small and medium boulders (described as a shingle bank) it has the same zonation as on the dyke, but these are wider and show a greater cover.
