Wallaces Rocks (sand), Outer Ards.

Survey number: 555 Event number: 19841105/21 Date: 1984-11-05 GPS: 54.52700,-5.47000. Depth: 3.5 to 0.2 m. [ View map ]

Site Description: The transect site is near the northern limit of Wallace's Rocks, just south of an island which is attached to the mainland by a sandspit at low water. The sediment is medium and coarse grained sand with some gravel. The area of sampling is dotted by low rock ridge platforms. The larger ones were dominated by Fucus vesiculosus and Porphyra sp. The smaller platforms had no obvious macrofauna or flora, perhaps due to scouring by sand. The black layer (which only occurs on the bottom three heights of the transect) is indistinct. Some surface seepage occurred below the strandline. There were many species of drift algae on the sand surface; these were not identified since they came from Wallace's Rocks, which has been sampled separately. Many species of waders were present including curlew and oystercatchers. The transect site comprises a short flat lower shore with ripple marks and a steeper upper shore. The lower shore had locally abundant concentrations of Lanice tubes. The maximum density of a patchy Arenicola population was 12-15 per sq. metre.
