Site Description: This is an exposed shore, composed of scattered large and medium limestone and igneous boulders (limestone predominating), with large patches of mobile shingle between the boulders. Animal diversity is poor, largely because of the mobile nature of the shingle, while algal distribution is patchy, confined to the large boulders. This stretch of coastline is mainly patellobarnacle dominated, but the transect site itself supports patchy fucoid cover on the large boulders. There was a good tide on the sampling date. Laminarians were well exposed along more sheltered parts of the coastline. However, the bottom Alaria zone at this site was composed only of a few scattered large boulders in large areas of shingle, and was constantly covered by breaking waves. Laminarians were visible in the troughs of breaking waves about 15 m offshore. Animal diversity was poor, algal diversity less than average.
