Site Description: A sedimentary transect on a boulder shore in Strangford Lough. (See 555 116 for physiographic features). A sheltered shore with small and medium boulders which are dominated by Ascophyllum and Fucus serratus. The shingle in the upper shore has Pelvetia and Fucus spiralis zones. The lower shore has an extensive sublittoral fringe of laminarians. The transect is sediment between fairly widely dispersed boulders, which is a mixture of coarse shelly sand and gravel with areas of stones or coarse sand. On digging, it was seen that the middle and lower shore had many Nephtys sp. with some Arenicola in the sandy areas and some Lanice in the lower shore. The upper shore had many amphipods, but few polychaetes. The nature of the sediment made use of normal survey methods difficult. A trench was dug at each height and searched for obvious macrofauna. A riddleful of sediment was riddled into a 1mm sieve from each station. This was sieved in the normal way and collected. This method ensured recording of the major fauna and some of the smaller macrofauna, but does not allow quantitative results or a full species list to be gained.
