Site Description: A large moderately exposed sandy bay at Bangor, Co. Down, which is popular for recreation and tourism. It is backed by urban areas of Bangor, behind a seawall and what appears to be amusement facilities and boat houses towards the northern end. The southern end has a woodland backing. A freshwater stream flows down the shore having the associated area of Ulva (originally recorded as Enteromorpha) attached to stones. This is not near the transect and will not affect flora and fauna found on/in it. The upper and middle shores are of steeply sloped dry compacted sand with gravel beneath, with a lower shore of flat wet sand. The latter has many Arenicola and Lanice, the Arenicola being small and densely populated in the more compacted sand and larger les dense forming mounds in the extreme lower shore. Ulva (originally recorded as Enteromorpha) and brown filaments are attached to the sand and often bound into it. Chorda and Laminaria are attached to pebbles in the lower shore. On sampling the infauna in the lower shore consisted of Arenicola, Lanice, Tellina and Nephtys. Thin red polychaetes were common in the drier sand of the middle and upper shores.
