Summary of site:
A quartz vein bearing gold, found here in 1985, led to the discovery of a whole series of north/south orientated veins that were later worked. The bedrock is the Mullaghcarn Formation, the youngest of the ancient Dalradian rock formations in the area.
The mineralization is believed to have occurred much later, in the Variscan orogeny, as in the neighbouring Curraghanilt deposit, somewhere between 325 and 315 million years ago. It differs slightly from Curraghanilt, being dominated by lead and zinc rather than copper. Silver ratios are also lower here.
