Geology beyond Northern Ireland

• The Geological Survey of Ireland, covering the Republic of Ireland, has an excellent website and diverse range of materials.
• Similarly the British Geological Survey, in addition to hosting much of the GSNI material, has a huge range of information for Britain.

Get involved

• Belfast Geologists Society has an annual programme of geology excursions and lectures.
• Belfast Naturalists Field Club has a geology section and usually has geology excursions as part of their events programme.

General information and other sources

E-magazines and online sources

• Earth Heritage is published twice a year and focuses on geological and landscape conservation matters in the UK.
• Geosupplies hold a wealth of equipment, maps and publications as well as running training events and geology themed trips in the UK and beyond. They produce a monthly e-mag called Down to Earth.
• An excellent and hugely diverse geology website is at Geology.com.

Museums

Most museums, including the Ulster Museum and Armagh Museum, hold informative and important geology displays. Two museums are particularly worth visiting: Dynamic Earth Exhibition, Edinburgh and the Natural History Museum, London, geology collection.

Geoconservation

At local, national and international levels, there is increasing recognition that our geological heritage, the story of Earth's history, is every bit in need of sustainable management and, in some cases conservation action, as our biodiversity and habitats. More information can be found at:

• Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) co-ordinate activities across the four UK regional statutory conservation bodies. GSNI via funding from the Environment Fund (administered by Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs) have developed a Geoconservation Charter for Northern Ireland: Geodiversity Charter NI, together with an Action Plan for 2017 - 2020: Geodiversity Action Plan.
• There is also a UK Geodiversity Action Plan.
• The magazine Geoheritage is a good source for up-to-date information on this theme.
• The aim of the Geoconservation Committee is to help conserve the diverse geology and rich geological and geomorphological heritage of the United Kingdom:
