Summary of site:

This is the site of an important gold find made in 1983. The gold occurs associated with pyrite (iron sulphide) and lesser quantities of other minerals in a series of quartz veins in the Mullaghcarn Formation (part of the Southern Highland Group of ancient Dalradian rocks). The mineralization, by high temperature fluids, happened in a phase of mountain building called the Variscan Orogeny during the Carboniferous period, around 320 million years ago.
