This string of caves occurs in a dry valley north east of Skea Hill. Carricknacoppan 1 develops immediately a small stream flows off the glacial drift on to the Knockmore Limestone. The water sinks and rises through bedding planes to a final rising. It then flows on the surface for around 200m sinking into Carricknacoppan 2—a small cave entered by a double shake hole upstream of the sink. The stream flows below the main passage and is seen again immediately before the final choke. Carricknacoppan 3 is 90m further down the valley from Carricknacoppan 2. A small hole in a group of shake holes steps down through a series of chambers to the active stream passage. Upstream this passage can be followed for 25m to a choke thought to link to Carricknacoppan 2.
