Introduction:

The name 'Trias' was proposed by Alberti (1834) to cover a sequence already known in fair detail at outcrop, particularly in Lower Saxony. Central to the classification was the recognition of the Muschelkalk, a part of the succession characterised by dolomites and limestones carrying a marine fauna. The strata below the Muschelkalk were termed `Bunter', those above `Keuper', thus creating the three-fold division which is still in use and from which the system name is derived. The stages of the system are shown in the following table:
