To place this site in context, the Slieve Gullion Ring – Overview, site 1118, should be read.
This roadside quarry above the eastern shore of Cam Lough worked the faulted and mineralised Silurian shales and grits of the ring dyke host rock for road stone. Expansion of the quarry uncovered the overhanging inner face of the porphyritic granophyre ring dyke exposing banded crush veins (mylonites). A complete traverse of the ring dyke to its outer wall can be made to the north across the lower slopes of Camlough Mountain.
This is one of a suite of key sites selected to demonstrate the structure and history of the Slieve Gullion Ring complex and is ideal for demonstrating the nature and emplacement of the porphyritic granophyre in the northern sector.
