Ceramium gaditanum (Clemente y Rubio) Cremades


Description: Thallus prostrate and erect to 15 cms long. Usually completely corticate. Spines few and inconspicuous and of more than one cell clearly not merging with the corticex.

Habitat: Epiphytic and epilithic in mid to low littoral.

Distribution: Widely distributed in the British Isles including the Channel Islands except the north of Scotland. Europe: Portugal, Spain and France. Further afield: Canary Islands.

Similar Species: Other spiny species of Ceramium: C.ciliatum, C.echinotum and C.shuttleworthianum.

Key Identification Features:

  • Spines sparce of more than one cell. Generally fully corticate.
