Gastroclonium reflexum (Chauvin) Kützing


Description: A branched dark red thallus growing to about 7 cms long from a discoid holdfast. Branches hollow and reflexed. Segmented to give a beaded appearance. Reflexed branches reattaching

Habitat: Rare. Epilithic or epiphytic especially on Corallina officinalis in rock pools of the lower or upper sublittoral.

Distribution: Local on south-western coasts of England, Wales, Ireland and the Channel Islands. Europe: Portugal and Spain. Further afield: Canary Islands.

Similar Species: Chylocladia verticillata is much more branched and grows to over 30 cms long. Gastroclonium ovatum is not segmented.
