Lomentaria articulata (Hudson) Lyngbye


Description: Thallus erect and well branched to 10 cms. Regularly constricted into bead-like sections, hollow and branching basically dichotomous, variably often bushy. Bright red in colour.

Habitat: Common in mid to low littoral rock pools and in the sublittoral to 18 m.

Distribution: Widely distributed around the British Isles including the Shetlands and the Channel Islands. Europe: Mediterranean, Azores, Portugal, Atlantic coasts of Spain and France, Norway and the Faroes. Further afield: Canary Islands .

Similar Species: Catenella caespitosa grows only in the upper littoral. Chylocladia verticillata grows to 30 cms long with whorled branches not beaded. Red in colour, usually bleached to brownish.
