Chylocladia verticillata (Lightfoot) Bliding


Description: Frond growing from a small discoid holdfast to 30 cms or more long, terete and hollow. Branches usually whorled and segmented, each segment longer than broad. Red, but usually bleached to pale brownish in colour.

Habitat: Common. Epilithic and epiphytic in rock pools of the lower littoral nad the sublittoral to 12 m or more.

Distribution: Widely distributed in the British Isles including the Shetlands. Europe: the Mediterranean, Portugal, Spain, France and Norway. Further afield: Canary Islands.

Similar Species: Champia parvula is not so clearly segmented and does not have branches in whorls.Lomentaria articulata is also strongly segmented but does not usually have whorled branches though it may have opposite branches.
