Champia parvula (C Agardh) Harvey


Description: Fronds arising in tufts from a discoid holdfast, up to 10 cms long with irregular branches not regularly whorled, though sometimes opposite. Mucilaginous but firm and slightly constricted into regular well defined segments by septa.

Habitat: Epiphytic in the upper sublittoral.

Distribution: Clearly a south western species, recorded in the British Isles from southern England and Ireland. Europe: Mediterranean, Azores, Portugal, Atlantic coasts of Spain and France. Atlantic coast of North America: Canada, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Rhode Island, Connecticut and Long Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina Bahamas and Florida. Further afield: Bermuda, West Indies, Canary Islands and Morocco.

Similar Species: Chylocladia verticillata and Lomentaria articulata are definitely articulated into segments, in Champia the articulations are not markedly constricted.
