Grateloupia doryphora (Montagne) Howe


Description: Flat irregular baldes rising from a discoid base to a length of 1 m and 2 - 20 cms broad.

Habitat: Very rare. Epilithic. In the upper sublittoral to 7 m in sheltered areas.

Distribution: In the British Isles, known only from Hampshire and Sussex. Europe: Mediterranean, Portugal and the Netherlands. Further afield: Morocco, Ghana, Angola, South Africa and in the Pacific, probably elsewhere under other names.

Similar Species: Other large foliose species such as Kallymenia, Halymenia and Schizymenia are similar.
