Laurencia obtusa (Hudson) Lamouroux


Description: Thallus erect to 20 cms with distinct main axis, terete with latterals spiral and opposite. Consists of medullary cells and an outer cortex.

Habitat: Uncommon. Epiphytic from the mid littoral to 6 m in the sublittortal.

Distribution: Widely distributed on westerly coasts of the British Isles including the Shetlands and Channel Isles. Europe: Mediterranean, Azores, Atlantic coasts of Spain and France. Further afield: Canary Islands, Jamaica, West Indies and Mauritius.

Similar Species: Chondria coerulescens may appear similar but can be distinguished in transverse section by the 5 conspiculous periaxial cells to be seen in in Chondria and not in L.obtusa.
