Description: Thallus a large dark green felt, with a spongy feel, up to 10 mm thick covering up to a square meter.

Habitat: Rare, but may be more common than the records indicate. Low littoral and sublittoral.

Distribution: Recorded in the British Isles from scattered sites on the south-west coast of England, west of Ireland, west of Scotland and the Channel Islands. Europe: Mediterranean, Azores, Portugal, Spain and France. Further afield: Canary Islands, Brazil, West Indies, west coast of Africa, Mauritius, Red Sea, Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Friendly Islands, Hawaii, Dutch East Indies and Bermuda.
