Description: Thallus large and erect in dense tufts of filaments to 20 cms long. All ramuli short and fine, in whorls clearly separated to the naked eye.
Habitat: Common especially on wave-exposed coasts. Low littoral and sublittoral to 20 m.
Distribution: A south-western species in the British Isles: south-west England, Wales, Ireland, Isle of Man and western Scotland also the Channel Islands. Europe: Portugal, Spain and the Baltic. Further afield: Canary Islands.
