Description: Thallus grows from a small discoid holdfast to 10 cms long. Stipe terete and relatively long, abruptly expands into a flat fan-shaped blade branching dichotomously several times.

Habitat: Common. Epilithic in rock pools of the lower littoral and in the sublittoral to 12 m depth.

Distribution: Widespread around the British Isles. Europe: Mediterranean, Portugal, Spain, France, Netherlands, the Baltic, Norway, Faroes and Iceland. Greenland. Atlantic coast of North America from Labrador to Delaware.

Key Identification Features:

  • Fan-shaped blade, long stipe. Blade expanding more abruptly from the stipe than the other species of Phyllophora and most other foliose red algae.
