Lithophyllum dentatum (Kützing) Foslie


Description: An encrusting calcified alga to 2 cm thick, sometimes unattached as balls of dense interlocked branches, or irregularly shaped.

Habitat: Sublittoral. Little information available.

Distribution: Reported in Ireland from Cos Cork, Galway and Mayo. Europe: Mediterranean and Spain.

Similar Species: When forming balls of interlocked branches is distinguished from L. duckeri which is more knobbly and L. fasciculatum which has more terete branches.

Key Identification Features:

  • Little information available. May be in ball-form similar to Lithophyllum and Lithophyllum fasculastum.
