Boergeseniella fruticulosa (Wulfen) Kylin


Description: Thallus cylindrical and polysiphonous in erect tufts to a length of 15 cms. Fully corticate with 9 - 12 periaxial cells. Branching pseudodichotomously in the older parts and irregularly alternately in the younger branches.

Habitat: Epiphytic and epilithic in the littoral and sublittoral to 7 m.

Distribution: British Isles: basically south-western but recorded around the coasts, except on the east coast of England, from the Shetlands and Channel Islands. Europe: Mediterranean, Azores, Atlantic coasts of Spain, France and the Faroes. Further afield: the Canary Islands and Morocco.

Similar Species: Polysiphonia subulifera however Boergesniella is corticate.
