Osmundea hybrida (De Candolle) Nam


Description: Thallus cylindrical and erect to 8.5 cms long, first order branches cylindrical or slightly compressed, further branches terete. Axes with circular terminal depression.

Habitat: Epilithic in rock pools of mid-littoral to lower littoral but not sublittoral, often mixed with Osmundea pinnatifida.

Distribution: Generally distributed around the British Isles including the Shetlands and Channel Islands. Europe: Portugal, Spain, Netherlands. Further afield: Canary Islands and Sri Lanka. Records from elsewhere require confirmation, may be based on species of Laurencia.

Similar Species: Chondria dasyphylla and other members of the genus.
