Chondria capillaris Hudson


Description: Thallus cylindrical, erect axes to 25 cms long, distinct main axes with irregular latterals. Main axes to 1.2 mm in diameter with axial cell, 5 periaxial cells, 2 - 3 layers of subcortical cells and a single layer of cortex. Latteral branches constricted at the base and spindle-shaped.

Habitat: Epilithic in the low littoral and sublittoral to 6 m.

Distribution: Generally south-westerly in the British Isles including Channel Isles with few records from Scotland. Europe: Mediterranean, Azores, Atlantic coasts of Spain and France, the Netherlands. Atlantic coasts of North America: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Delaware, Virginia and Florida. Further afield: Cuba, Bahamas and Canary Islands.
