Chondria dasyphylla (Woodward) C Agardh


Description: Thallus cylindrical, erect axes to 1.5 mm in diameter in tufts to 21 cms long. Main axes distinct with obtuse apices terminating in a depression. Conspicuous diamond pattern visible in the young axes. Latterals irregular, clearly constricted at their base.

Habitat: Epilithic and on pebbles, shells and maerl. Mostly sublittoral l to 20 m.

Distribution: Widely distributed on the western coasts of the British Isles including the Shetland Islands and the Channel Islands. Europe: Mediterranean, Portugal, Spain, France, the Baltic and the Netherlands. Atlantic coast of North America: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, North Carolina, Virginia and Florida. Further afield: the Canary Islands and Mauritius.
