Dasya ocellata (Grateloup) Harvey


Description: Thallus erect to 5 cms long polysiphonous axis composed of 5 periaxial cells and corticate. Rhizoidal branches spread over the substrate and produce further erect axis. Ramuli monosiphonous.

Habitat: Rather rare. Epiphytic and epilithic in low littoral and sublittora to 20 m.

Distribution: South-west coasts of the British Isles including Southern Ireland and the Channel Islands. Europe: the Mediterranean, Portuga and Spain. Further afield: Canary Islands, Morocco and the Caribbean.

Similar Species: Other species of Dasya are similar and herbarium specimens have frequently been incorrectly determined. The differences are microscopic.
