Brown trout is a major resource for tourist and recreational angling as well as being an important and unique component of Irish biodiversity. At the end of the last ice age, some 14,000 years ago, several distinct lineages of brown trout colonised Ireland from various ice-free refuges elsewhere in Europe. This multiple colonisation, together with adaptation to local conditions since then, has resulted in considerable genetic diversity today, which is reflected in variation in appearance, growth, feeding, life history and many other characteristics. Victorian naturalists recognized this diversity by naming numerous species of brown trout and although many of these are no longer regarded as valid, there is still some debate ongoing, with some taxonomists believing there are multiple valid species within Salmo trutta. It is important that the unique genetic diversity that is present within and among brown trout populations is conserved, irrespective of whether we regard these populations as belonging to a single species or a species complex.
In brief
Species description: Fish of the family Salmonidae have a small fleshy fin (adipose fin) on the back just in front of the tail fin, a characteristic which is absent in other European fishes. Colouration is very variable, both within and among waters. Typically the back is brown or bluish-grey in colour grading to grey, silver or yellow on the sides and white on the belly. The back and sides are covered in spots that are black, and sometimes red, in colour and vary in size, shape and distribution. Sea trout (brown trout that have been feeding in the sea) are silvery in appearance with black spots. Brown trout typically live for about 5-6 years and reach several kilograms in weight. However, the ferox ecotype/subspecies can live for more than 20 years and fish of up to 9 kg have been taken in Lower Lough Erne and Lough Melvin.
Life cycle: Spawning normally occurs from October to January in fast-flowing shallow water in tributary streams although it can occur in lakes where there is sufficient up-welling or other turbulence to oxygenate the eggs. A nest (redd) is excavated in the gravel of the riverbed or lake by the female; the eggs are deposited, fertilised by the attendant male(s), and then covered over with gravel. After some weeks, depending on the water temperature, the eggs hatch into alevins, which, after they have used up the food material in the yolk sac, become fry. These fry move up to the surface of the gravel becoming the main juvenile stage called parr. Trout may remain resident in the same stream where they were born but in most cases there is a downstream migration to a deeper part of the river, a lake, or to the sea. The lake migratory form is the most abundant one in Ireland. Mature adults can accurately home back to the stream where they were born by smelling out the unique chemical composition of that water. This natal homing instinct maintains the genetic distinctness of populations, even when they feed as adults in the same lake or sea, and allows natural selection to produce adaptations to local environmental conditions.
Similar species: Atlantic salmon can be confused with brown trout (Salmo trutta) in the freshwater juvenile stage and adults returning from sea can be confused with sea trout — the marine migratory form of brown trout. The Atlantic Salmon Trust website is a good resource, and shows the main characteristics used to differentiate the two species. Hybrids with brown trout also occur at about one per cent in some rivers and are difficult to identify definitively, except by molecular genetic analysis. There is also some confusion about whether there are distinct species within Salmo trutta or whether these are subspecies or ecotypes.
How to see this species: Brown trout can be seen in most clean rivers at any time where the water is slow flowing and clear although specific types/species are restricted to certain water systems. Polaroid glasses assist viewing. Juveniles are difficult to distinguish from Atlantic salmon at a distance.
Brown trout, in the generic sense, is widespread and found in all non-polluted rivers and lakes in Northern Ireland. Presence of brown trout is a good indicator of a healthy aquatic environment. Genetically unique populations are often referred to by local names such as dollaghan, ferox, gillaroo, salmon-trout, and sonaghen. These are present in the Melvin, Erne and Neagh systems, and in some coastal rivers, especially in the Mournes (for example, Whitewater, Spence’s, Shimna) and Glens of Antrim (for example, Glynn, Glenariff).
Current status: Declining. Northern Ireland (Lough Melvin) has the only known remaining UK populations of gillaroo and sonaghen types and has about 50 per cent of Irish breeding population of the latter.
Some unique populations have become extinct in the last century (for example, in Lough Neagh) and others (for example, ferox and gillaroo of Lough Melvin) are declining and threatened. The unique native brown trout in the Lower Lough Erne system have been comprised by extensive stocking with farm-reared brown trout and pure Erne fish are largely confined to tributaries in the upper Lough Erne and Macnean systems. Sea trout numbers have declined in many rivers, although substantial populations still occur in the main river systems of the north coast especially Foyle, Roe and lower Bann.
Why is this species a priority in Northern Ireland?
Threats: The main threats are pollution, habitat degradation including siltation from drainage and overgrazing, water abstraction resulting in low flows, overfishing (commercial, recreational and illegal fishing), reduction in prey species (for example, pollan and Arctic char for ferox), introduction of non-native aquatic animals (for example, pike, cyprinid fish, zebra mussel), introduction of diseases and parasites through stocking and from salmon farming (especially sea lice), creation of barriers to upstream migration (for example, due to construction of hydroelectric plants), predation by birds and mammals.
Stocking with farm-reared brown trout is a major cause of loss of genetic integrity in unique populations and also results in a loss of juvenile recruitment and reduction in population numbers.
