Description: A 4-5mm brown-black Badister similar to both B. dilatatus and B. collaris. Found on mud amongst lush vegetation at the margins of standing water. Very local species, in the south-west only.
NI account: The first confirmed Irish record is that of Speight (1977) for Garryland Wood, south-east Galway. It has a scattered distribution in south-western counties and is rarer than B. dilatatus. Known from North Tipperary, Southeast Galway, Clare and Roscommon.
Ecology: It has very similar requirements to B. dilatatus with which it has been recorded on several occasions.
Distribution: A Eurosiberian temperate species (74) distributed from western and northern Europe to the Caucasus and central Siberia.
Similar Species: Badister collaris: distinguishable with certainty only on the male genitalia; elytral striae finer, intervals flat. B. dilatatus: distinguishable with certainty only on the male genitalia; hind angles of pronotum more rounded, oblique lateral area slightly arcuate (Fig. 90)
