Agonum lugens (Duftschmid, 1812)

Description: A moderate-sized (8.5-10mm) dull black beetle with very flat elytral intervals living in sparsely vegetated muddy shorelines of lakes and rivers in the eastern part of the Burren. Unknown in Britain or elsewhere in Ireland.

NI account: Found repeatedly at Dromore Forest on the River Fergus, Clare (Anderson 1985), and apparently restricted to karstic limestone areas abutting the catchment of the Fergus in Clare. Owen (1997) has also taken the species (1993, 1996) at Lough Gash in south Clare. Unknown in Britain.

Ecology: A member of the turlough community in Clare but also found on silty shorelines of lakes and rivers in karstic areas.

Distribution: A European Wide-temperate species (63) recorded from southern Fennoscandia to the Iberian Peninsula and east to the Caucasus, but not in Britain, Belgium or Holland.

Similar Species: Separated from all Agonum s. str., in particular the black species nigrum and afrum by the dull upper surface and weakly denticulate pronotal hind angles
