Bembidion mannerheimii Sahlberg, 1827

Description: A small (2.8-3.4mm) black ground beetle common in moist places near freshwater and on upland peat.

NI account: In contrast to the very similar B. guttula, this was considered to be common in Ireland by Johnson & Halbert (1902). There is abundant reference material in collections, and it is still one of the commonest Bembidions.

Ecology: There is a strong overlap with B. guttula in habitat preferences but B. mannerheimi is the more likely of the two to occur on oligotrophic, peaty soils. However, there are few records for typically wet, blanket peat.

Distribution: A Eurosiberian temperate species (74), distributed across Europe to western Siberia.

Similar Species: Bembidion guttula: legs and base of antennae darker; pronotum less strongly rounded at sides, hind angles sharp (Fig. 52) B. aeneum: larger; pronotal sinuation deeper (Fig. 51); legs uniformly dark

Key Identification Features:

  • Small (2.8-3.5mm)
  • Terminal segment of palpi much reduced (Fig. 31)
  • Pronotum shallowly sinuate at base and hind angles rounded (Fig. 45)
  • Subapical spot on elytra distinct
  • Pronotum less dull, shiny
  • Legs and base of antennae pale, clear
