Bembidion dentellum (Thunberg, 1787)

Description: 5-6mm long bronze and yellow-patterned ground beetle of sandy fens and riverbanks. Widespread but local.

NI account: Very scattered. Mostly in the east and south.

Ecology: Thermophilic on sparsely-vegetated, silty/sandy riverbanks and lakeshores, usually with species of Subgenus Philochthus or Subgenus Peryphus. Largely south-eastern in Britain (Luff, 1998).

Distribution: A Eurasian Boreo-temperate species (55) distributed across Europe to eastern Siberia.

Similar Species: Bembidion varium: smaller (4-5mm); elytra not iridescent; anterior supra-orbital puncture not surrounded by shiny area B. fumigatum: smaller (3.5-4mm); frontal furrows double (Fig. 47); elytra not iridescent; setiferous punctures on elytra touching striae

Key Identification Features:

  • Size 5.5-6mm
  • Terminal segment of palpi much reduced (Fig. 31)
  • Elytra variegated light orange-brown and dark brown (Fig. 46), iridescent
  • Anterior supra-orbital puncture surrounded by an elevated shiny area
  • Setiferous punctures on third elytral interval not touching striae
