Euglesa hibernica (Westerlund, 1894)

Globular pea mussel

Description: A very tumid, rounded oval shell with prominent central umbos. Surface with silky/glossy periostracum ornamented by fine, regular striae. Colour grayish to brownish white with scattered red-brown deposits. Common across Ireland. 2.5-3.5mm.

World Distribution: Distribution type: Eurasian Boreo-temperate (55).

Irish Distribution: Widely distributed in Ireland but probably commoner towards the west.

Ecology:

  • Characteristic of highland lakeshore communities together with Euglesa lilljeborgi
  • But found across a wide altitudinal and climatic range
  • Occurs in a range of habitats, from loughans and lakeshores to lowland rivers and canals

  • Evenly rounded with prominent central umbos
  • Surface silky/glossy and sculptured by fine, regular striae
