Cladophora vagabunda (Linnaeus) van den Hoek


Description: Thallus to 50 cms long and well branched. Growth mainly acropetal with branches which may be falcate.

Habitat: Possibly rare. Rocky pools of the littoral, in estuaries, ditches and salt marches of sheltered areas, occurs in brackish water.

Distribution: Few scattered records in the British Isles. Europe: Mediterranean, Atlantic coast of Spain and France, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Baltic Sea and Norway. Atlantic coast of North America: Canada, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Long Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. Further afield: Caspian Sea, Black Sea, Turkey, Liberia, Ghana and W.Cameroon.

Similar Species: Most species of Cladophora are similar and difficult to identify.
