Cladophora dalmatica Kützing


Description: Thallus large, filamentous to 50 cms, or more, long the branches often bending backwards (falcate) or branching to one side only (pectinate) depending on conditions.

Habitat: Epilithic, epiphytic or floating. May be attached by rhizoids in sheltered or exposed conditions in the littoral.

Distribution: Probably common in the British Isles including the Orkney Islands and the Channel Islands. Europe: Mediterranean and the Black Sea, Atlantic coasts of Spain and France, Netherlands, Atlantic coast of Germany and Baltic Sea. Atlantic coast of North America: Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Virginia, Florida and Texas. Further afield: the Canary Islands, Bermuda, Bahamas, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Guadaloupe, Curacao, Columbia, South Africa and Ghana.

Similar Species: Most species of Cladophora are similar and difficult to identify, may be under-recorded.
