Cladophora aegagropila (Linnaeus) Trevisan


Description: Thallus filamentous. Growing attached in dense tufts to 3 cms long and irregularly branched. Also growing unattached in balls to 20 cms in diameter.

Habitat: Not common and not fully marine, may be found in freshwater, brackish lagoons and in the littoral of shores of low salinity. Generally in shade to depths of 20 m.

Distribution: Recorded from scattered sites in Britain, only once in Ireland. Europe: Mediterranean, Germany, Switzereland, Austria, Poland, France, Netherlands, Denmark, Baltic Sea, Sweden, Faroes and Finland. Further afield: Russia.

Similar Species: Most species of Cladophora are similar and difficult to identify, may be under-recorded.
