Blidingia minima (Nägeli ex Kützing) Kylin


Description: Thallus small tubular to 5 cms long and expanding to about 4 mm wide, may be branched or unbranched.

Habitat: Common. Epilithic in the upper littoral of exposed and sheltered shores, also in brackish water.

Distribution: Widespread all around the British Isles including the Shetlands but often overlooked. Europe: Mediterranean, Spain, France, Netherlands, Baltic, Norway, Faroes and Iceland. Atlantic coast of North America: Canada, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Delaware and Virginia. Further afield: Arctic Seas Stitzbergen, from the Murman Sea, Novaya Zemlaya, Siberian Sea to the west coast of Greenland. Canary Islands, California, South Africa and New Zealand.

Similar Species: Enteromorpha and Blidingia but distinctive microscopically.
