Pilinia rimosa Kützing


Description: Growing as a dense spongy crust of branching filaments giving rise to tufts of erect filaments 2 mm high.

Habitat: Rare but possibly under-recorded. Epilithic on stones, shells or wood. Mid to upper littoral and in caves.

Distribution: Recorded from scattered sites in Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, Isle of Mann and the Channel Islands. Atlantic coast of Europe: Spain, France, Netherlands, Germany, Baltic, Norway, Sweden. Atlantic coast of North America: Maine, Massachusetts and Florida. Further afield: New Zealand, Jamacia and the Canary Islands.
