Herponema velutinum (Greville) J Agardh


Description: Very small tufts growing in a the host alga. Erect filaments to 1.5 mm long, simple rarely branched. Partially endophytic.

Habitat: Not uncommon. On the receptacles of Himanthalia lorea.

Distribution: Recorded from scattered sites around the British Isles from the Shetlands to the Scilly and Channel Islands. Europe: Mediterranean, Portugal, Spain, France, Netherlands, Helgoland, Norway and Faroes.

Similar Species: Many other small tufted algae are similar, all require microscopic examination for identification.
