Sporochnus pedunculatus (Hudson) C Agardh


Description: Thalli erect and well branched to 30 cms or more long. Distinct main axis with well spaced alternate branching. All axes with short branches, about 3 mm long, of limited growth. Each of these branches with a terminal tuft of uniseriate filaments.

Habitat: Rare. Epiphytic on stones, gravel or shells, especially in silty areas, sublittoral to 18 m.

Distribution: Generally western in the British Isles. Europe: Mediterranean, Portugal, Atlantic Spain and France, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Further afield: the Canary Islands, Caribbean, Pacific U.S.A., New Zealand.

Similar Species: Carpomitra costata is similar in having a tuft of hair-like filaments at the ends of the branches. It has, however, a flattened thallus.
