Dictyota spiralis Montagne


Description: Similar to Dictyota dichotoma, branching irregularly dichotomous but unlike D.dichotoma with few branches usually with rounded tips slightly enlarged. In section the central tissue is of large cells more than one cell thick.

Habitat: Rare. Sublittoral.

Distribution: A southern species with records from the west of Ireland, from Cornwall in England and the Channel Islands. Europe: Mediterranean, Portugal, Atlantic coasts of Spain and France. Further afield: the Canary Islands.

Similar Species: Dictyota dichotoma is distinguishable by the central tissue of large cells being only one cell thick even near the base.
